UX and photography, part 1: telling a story
1 Feb 2026
Summary: UX and photography both are about telling and visualizing a story.
User Experience (UX) design starts with knowing who are your users, and what they want to do. Understanding your users is the basis for prioritizing product development, for designing interaction flows, and for, well, basically for every aspect of having a succesfull product.
So how do you share this user understanding across teams and management? Powerpoints and spreadsheets with lots of data and insights are useful in the analysis and synthesis phase, but they don't necessarily make team members pay attention and feel more of a bond with their users.
This is where story telling and visuals come into play. Things like personas, journey maps, "a day in the life of", and ... photos!
Like with UX, a photo of a person or a situation will have more impact if you really understand the subject of your photo. And when you do understand, then even a single photo can tell a rich story.
