UX and photography, part 2: creative process

13 Feb 2026

Summary: UX and photography thrive by trial and error.

A photo fails if you did not take it. And a photo rarely is right the first time. So you'll have to try, to experiment and to make variations. And use 'failures' to further build up your experience and techniques.

Replace 'photo' by 'design' or by 'UX', and this is equally true.

Basically this is the creative process.

Yes, there is method to the madness, and yes you apply your training. However, the best outcomes are the result of playing with the rules, and applying your tools and techniques in different ways, and learn along the way how it works, and be surprised.

For example, in design we learned to play with the rules of traditional print design, and bend them and have them flow with responsive web design. And we're still learning!

As an example in photography, you're advised not to take a photo looking against the sun. And yes, for e.g .clear portraits and colorful landscapes, that's good advice. On the other hand, you can use the resulting high contrast and make it part of the image you want to create.
